Context and Problem Statement:
According to official numbers, over 4 lakh Indians have died in the past year and a half from COVID-19, though actual numbers are likely more than twice this figure. Additionally, the economic paralysis caused by prolonged lockdown has shuttered many small businesses and many of their former owners have either passed away and their family members lack the technical knowledge and funds to continue.
Across India, many families have lost their sole earner due to the pandemic, and have subsequently been left for months without a way to sustain themselves. Though other family members may want to earn a livelihood, they lack the funds, financial literacy, and business knowledge to do so. These families are left with no monetary support and are full of debt due to medical bills of the deceased member.
Proposed Intervention:
We are providing livelihood support in the form of direct bank transfers as seed fund and capacity building to families who have lost their primary earner due to COVID-19. The funds transferred are to be used by the beneficiaries to start over or scale up their livelihood in order to provide for their family. The funds raised through this campaign will be matched by individual donors from our professional and personal network.
